Wegmans, the Rochester-based grocery chain with a cult following across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, is coming to Charlotte — and the location puts it squarely in the orbit of Firethorne residents.

The new store will be built at 11550 North Community House Road within the Ballantyne Reimagined development, roughly a 15-minute drive from Firethorne's main gate. It is the first Wegmans location in the Charlotte metro area.

What Is Wegmans?

For residents who have not encountered Wegmans before — and that includes most people who grew up in the Charlotte area — the short version is that it is a large-format grocery store that combines a full supermarket with an extensive prepared-foods section, in-store dining, a bakery, a cheese shop, a sushi bar, an organic and bulk section, and a pharmacy. The Charlotte store is planned at approximately 110,000 square feet, roughly double the size of a standard Harris Teeter or Publix.

Wegmans has consistently ranked among the top companies to work for in the United States and has a devoted customer base that treats store openings as community events. The company is privately held and family-owned, now in its fourth generation of Wegman family leadership under CEO Colleen Wegman.

Timeline and Location

Wegmans purchased 14.32 acres at the Ballantyne site for $15.8 million in January 2025. Groundbreaking took place in September 2025. The store is targeted to open in fall 2026.

The development is transforming the former Ballantyne Corporate Park — a 535-acre campus — into a mixed-use district with retail, dining, residential, office and entertainment. Other confirmed tenants and features include The Amp (a 5,000-person-capacity amphitheater) and The Bowl at Ballantyne (a dining and entertainment district with tenants including North Italia, Flower Child and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery).

For Firethorne residents, the Wegmans site is accessible via Providence Road West to I-485 to Ballantyne Commons Parkway — a straightforward route that avoids most of the surface-street congestion in the Ballantyne Village area.

What This Means for Firethorne Grocery Shopping

Firethorne residents currently have several grocery options within a reasonable drive: Harris Teeter in Blakeney, Publix in Waxhaw (at Marvin Gardens, 1615 Providence Road S), and other grocery stores in the Ballantyne and Weddington corridors. Wegmans will add the most comprehensive single-store option in the area — and for shoppers who currently make separate trips for specialty items, it could consolidate several stops into one.

The prepared-foods section is likely to be the biggest draw for busy families. Wegmans stores typically offer a rotating selection of ready-to-eat meals, family-size entrees, grab-and-go lunches and catering-quality platters — all prepared in-house.

The Ballantyne Reimagined Context

Wegmans is one piece of the Ballantyne Reimagined project, developed by Northwood Investors, which acquired the campus in 2017. The project is the single largest development initiative in south Charlotte, converting a traditional office park into a walkable mixed-use district. For Firethorne residents who already shop and dine in the Ballantyne area, the transformation will significantly expand the options available within that 15-minute drive radius.

Strolling Firethorne will track the Wegmans opening and the broader Ballantyne Reimagined project as construction progresses.
