Gabby Starr Has Three Pieces of Financial Advice for Every Family in Firethorne

Gabby Starr of Transamerica Agency Network shares her three-point checklist for Firethorne families: get portable life insurance, have a will, and plan for long-term care. A 23-year Charlotte resident and UNC-Chapel Hill grad, she brings an educator's instinct to financial planning.

If you've met Gabrielle "Gabby" Starr at a neighborhood event or through a friend-of-a-friend referral, you already know she's not the kind of insurance agent who buries the pitch in small talk. Her advice is direct: get life insurance, have a will, plan for long-term care.

Most people nod. Most people don't follow through.

"Not having a plan is not a good plan," Gabby says. "Most of my clients have coverage at work, but not outside of work. Work coverage is often not portable, and as you get older, the cost goes up."

From the Classroom to the Coverage Gap

Gabby has been a Charlotte resident for 23 years. She grew up in Eastern North Carolina, the daughter of two educators, and followed their path to UNC-Chapel Hill and then into a career as a guidance counselor. That foundation — the instinct to educate, to meet people where they are, to explain without condescending — still shapes how she works today.

She found her way into financial services through the kind of happy accident that sounds improbable but isn't. "I joined Transamerica 6.5 years ago after my neighbor posted online that he was looking for a part-time recruiter. We took a chance on each other," she says. What started as a 1099 agent role evolved into a W2 position and now a management role at Transamerica Agency Network – Charlotte, where she supports individuals, families, and small business owners in preparing for the things nobody wants to think about.

What sets Gabby apart is her accessibility. She gives clients her personal cell phone number and encourages them to call her directly — a practice that sounds old-fashioned until you realize how rare it's become.

The Conversation Nobody Wants to Have

Her advice to Firethorne residents comes down to three things, and she's blunt about all of them:

Get life insurance. Not through your job — on your own, portable, something that doesn't disappear when you change employers.

Have a will. "You must have a will to avoid probate," she explains. It's not optional, and it's not something to get around to next year.

Plan for long-term care. "Do you want your kids or family to physically take care of you or supervise your care?" It's the question most families never ask until they have to.

Gabby doesn't do estate planning herself, but she'll tell you exactly what you need and who to call. The guidance counselor in her never really went away.

A Familiar Face Across South Charlotte

As a proud single mom of two teens — ages 16 and 14 — Gabby understands the math of family planning on a personal level. She and her kids, along with their 12-year-old beagle mix Bagel, make it a priority to take an annual trip together. Quality time on purpose, not by accident.

Readers of Strolling Ballantyne may recognize Gabby from an earlier profile — she's been a trusted resource across the south Charlotte community for years. For Firethorne families, she's worth knowing.

"I love what I do," she says. "Life is too short to be miserable — you should find your passion."

For Gabby, that passion is making sure the people around her are protected before they need to be.
